ACTS IN 90 DAYS

A reading for Friday, August 14, 2020: Acts 18:1-17.

“Do not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent; for I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to harm you, for there are many in this city who are my people.”

In Corinth, Paul taught inside the synagogue. As a Jewish rabbi, Paul commanded the authority to preach and to teach amidst the other Jewish leaders. It was not unusual for Jewish leaders to argue over theology and even scripture. This was regular practice.

At some point, however, a tension begins between Paul and the others. They don't like his message, and Paul doesn't like that they don't like his message. The Jewish leaders work to silence Paul and yet, Paul continues to preach and to teach and many in Corinth are converted.

No matter what we do, often there will be those that don't like it. This is true in most things but especially in matter of faith and religion. Wars have been fought over such disagreements. Many have suffered when family members and friends align against them over matters of faith.

Still, disagreements over matters of faith often mean that something is happening. This was true for Paul and it's still true for us. Our willingness to engage with others, even when. that is difficult and uncomfortable sometimes means God is able to work something out in the world around us. We ask, "Is something happening here?"

Look at what Paul was able to do in Corinth. Thanks be to God.
