ACTS IN 90 DAYS

A reading for Monday, July 6, 2020: Acts 13:1-3.

“Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

In our age, the initiation of new congregations has become the work of denominations and even church planting affinity groups. Most local congregations are focused on their own members and the work of their own ministry. Occasionally a church might partner with another or with the larger judicatory body to do something in mission or ministry, but it's not the regular work of the congregation.

Years ago when I visited Guatemala pretty regularly, we worshipped at a church in Amatitlán. The pastor, who has become a friend of mine, was focused on planting new congregations. The church did not have a lot of resources. They were small in numbers by most measures in the states, however they were focused with their money and their time. I was blessed to celebrate communion for the first time in a brand new church planted by this congregation. Miguel's church sent a pastor and elders to help the new congregation get started.

It reminds me of the story of the church in Antioch. They too were focused on spreading the good news and planting a new congregation beyond the one God established in Antioch. Through the Holy Spirit, God sent Paul and Barnabas to do this important work. Thanks be to God!

I wonder what we are being called to do in our age?
