Seeking the Common Good
ACTS IN 90 DAYS
A reading for Friday, May 22, 2020: Acts 5:12-16.
"Yet more than ever believers were added to the Lord, great numbers of both men and women"
The early apostles were the hands and feet of Jesus in the post-resurrection church. Just as Jesus had done, they cured all those in need and many were captivated by the power and the compassion of these first believers. What an exciting time to be part of what God is doing.
Notice it seems they were not motivated to gather a large crowd or become famous. Even in the first century, there were many motivated by such things. Instead, these early followers imitated the Lord Jesus and simply went about seeking the common good of all in their community. Healing the sick in their neighborhood and beyond, in service to God, was their mission.
...and notice the church grew in spite of a lack of attention to such things. Perhaps it's still God that grows the numbers of believers and not our efforts?
Seeking the common good is always the mission of the church. What an exciting time to be part of what God is doing. Thanks be to God!
