The Saga Continues...
ACTS IN 90 DAYS
A reading for Wednesday, May 13, 2020: Acts 2:43-47.
"Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles."
Remember the early days of Jesus' ministry? By chapter 4 in Luke, Jesus has started his public ministry and immediately we see him teaching, healing and preaching the Kingdom of God. Right away, we also see that Jesus starts to gather a crowd. By the end of chapter 4, in verse 42 we see that "the crowds were looking for him," so much so that he begins to seek a deserted place.
In Acts, we see the very same sequence of events. By chapter two we have already seen the Spirit of God restore and heal the community of Jesus followers, and we have seen Peter teach and preach about the Kingdom of God. Our lesson starts today with a crowd gathering "because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles."
The message is clear. Jesus is not dead, and is certainly not gone. He lives through the faithful witness of his disciples who continue to teach, heal and preach in the world in which they live.
Perhaps the most exciting news of all from today... this public ministry of Jesus disciples continues even today with all of us. This blueprint of the early church lives on through us. We spend time in worship. We break bread in our homes and eat our daily bread with glad and generous hearts. When we live our calling as Jesus followers, and Jesus lives through our faithful witness, then the Lord will add to our numbers in the same way.
