Two Is Better Than One

A reading for Maundy Thursday, April 9, 2020: Mark 14:12-25.

"So he sent two of his disciples..." Two? Surely, the procurement of a room to hold the Passover meal was no more than a one person job. It doesn't take two people to book a room. Right? So why two?

Could it be that any journey of faith requires two? Even such a simple task for the disciples was a journey of faith. In other parts of the gospels we see Jesus send out his disciples in pairs. It's just better when there is more than one. Safety in numbers. Someone to talk to. A shoulder to cry on. Someone to share your excitement.

The ones I am most concerned about this Easter holiday are those that are alone. Because of our social distancing, there are some that will be alone on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and even Easter. But they don't have to be. Call. FaceTime. Zoom Call. Cook a meal and eat it together on screen or on the phone. Worship together online. Tell a joke or a favorite story. It's not the same, I know. But two is better than one even in virtual ways.

Safety in numbers (even at home). Someone to talk to. A shoulder to cry on. Someone to share your excitement. Two is better than one.
