Prayer and Humility

A reading for Thursday, March 30, 2017: Luke 18:1-14.

Relationship with God requires at least two things, according to our lessons from Jesus in today's scripture.

The first is consistency and connection. Pray constantly, says Jesus. We listen and we ask. We spend time with God allowing our hearts to be open to God.

The second is humility. Our orientation to God is vertical and our orientation to our neighbors is horizontal. If we believe we are better than others, putting ourselves in an elevated position, then we have failed to observe the sin in our own lives. Our place is not to judge. Love your neighbor as you love yourself is the command.

C.S. Lewis wrote, “As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on thing and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down you cannot see something that is above you.”

Prayer and humility go a long way towards faith.
