Be Humble
A reading for Thursday, March 16, 2017: Luke 14:7-14.
I heard someone remind church leaders last night that we are different. As disciples of Jesus, our ways are not the ways of the world in which we live. Ours is a strange ethic, a way of life oriented differently to obey and follow Jesus our Lord...
Surely one of the differences we are called to is humility. We live in a world of self-promotion and personal branding. Social media demands we represent ourselves as successful, happy and all together. It's certainly possible to be vulnerable and humble in the way we present ourselves to others, but most of us don't. It doesn't seem like that's the way to get ahead.
However, Jesus taught the disciples that humility and vulnerability was a high virtue. The first will be last and the last will be first. Do not take the seat at the head of the table, or the place of honor at the banquet. Be humble so that others might be exalted first. Do not invite those that can repay you in a tat for tat system, instead humble yourself to invite the poor and the sick. In doing so you will be doing what's right and that's the far better way.
Disciples of Jesus, today we are called to be humble. May we honor the request of Jesus our Lord.
