Walking With God...

A reading for Thursday, January 5, 2017: Leviticus 26:3-13.

When reading our lesson from Leviticus today, we might remember the story of Adam and Eve from Genesis 3. "They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze..."

God's intention for our lives is relationship. Relationship with God through Christ. Relationship with each other. Relationship with all of creation. In Leviticus we see an example of what that relationship looks like. Even if our relationship no longer looks the same, the intention of God to bless us and keep us and look with favor on us remains.

If we take the words of Leviticus too precisely then we might be led to a "prosperity gospel" of sorts. We might misunderstand that the blessings of God in and of themselves are signs of God's favor. In fact, God's favor is already given in Christ Jesus. So when we are blessed as well as when we suffer, God's favor is still present. God walks with us...

That's what relationship looks like. When things are good we count on relationship. When times are hard, relationship is what gets us through. We thank God for our blessings, but we know God is also present when we struggle.

God's intention for our lives is relationship, with God, with others and with creation. In our lesson today from Leviticus we read: "And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you shall be my people." We are always walking with God...
