We Wait
A reading for Friday, December 9, 2016: Micah 5:2-4.
Sometimes waiting for God can be the hardest discipline of faith.
Micah encouraged the people of God with a message that someday their help would come from Bethlehem, from a king born of the line of David. But for now, says Micah, we must wait. "Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has brought forth..." Waiting, waiting, waiting. How long O Lord?
In our day the season of Advent too is about waiting. We know the king born of the line of David. We have been saved and redeemed already. We know a grace given to us already out of the ancient waiting of generations, and yet Advent is also about waiting for all things to be fully revealed and restored.
As we watch our news, we wait for peace. As we listen for the next part of our purpose or our vocation or the news of a medical test or a family member to reach out to us, we wait for grace. As we discern what's next in so many parts of our lives, we wait for hope.
Until "he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God." Until all things are secure in God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we wait!
