God's Justice
A reading for Wednesday, December 7, 2016: Joel 3:1-2a, 17-18.
Part of loving us is God's commitment to justice. As the prophet Joel proclaims, in the end God will gather all the nations together in the valley of Jehoshaphat and will judge and restore the fortunes of the faithful of God. It is a message of hopefulness and a trajectory of resolution to the way God intends that the world be ordered for peace.
In the end all of creation will be restored, and Joel even gives us an image for what that restoration looks like. "...the mountains shall drip sweet wine, the hills shall flow with milk, and all the stream beds of Judah shall flow with water; a fountain shall come forth from the house of the Lord and water the Wadi Shittim." God's justice is about wholeness and abundance.
This is how we are to view God's justice too. We make choices for our lives to serve that which brings wholeness and abundance to us as well as the lives of others. All the while we remember that it is not us that ultimately bring justice, but God.
The tension between God loving and God's justice is the arc upon which we live our Christian lives... and is nothing less than the hope of the world!
