Priestly Nation

A reading for Thursday, October 6, 2016: Exodus 19:1-9, 20-25.

"If you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation."

From the mountain, Moses and the people of God learn that they are to be set aside as holy. This is not just a privilege to be enjoyed, but a way to serve all the peoples of the earth, every nation. By example and action, we serve others in the name of our God.

Merriam Webster defines a priest: "one authorized to perform the sacred rites of a religion especially as a mediatory agent between humans and God." This is what it means, according to God on the mountain with Moses, to be the people of God.

Look out your front door... If you are a Christian, of the people of God, you are a "priest" for all you see in front of you. You are a priestly kingdom and a holy nation!
