Pillars
A reading for Monday, October 3, 2016: Exodus 13:17-22.
"The Lord went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night." In the days before Holy Scripture, God led the people of the covenant with a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire.
Today, God leads God's people with the Word through scripture and the Sacraments. These are the pillars in which the Holy Spirit shows us the way in our coming in and our going out. These new pillars are how God cares for us. We don't need to read the story of the Exodus with longing for the good old days when God was more visible, we only need to understand the ways in which God still calls us and cares for us along the journey.
The pillars have changed, but God remains the same...
