Committed!

A reading for Thursday, September 22, 2016: Genesis 22:1-14.

We show our commitments by what we do, not just by what we say. If we say we are in relationship with someone and care about them, but will do nothing to help them or to lift their burden, then we are not really committed. If we cannot be happy for someone else when they experience joy or find purpose, then again our words of compassion and care mean nothing.

Abraham loved God and was committed. He was committed not just with words, but would hold nothing back, not even his own son. It seems strange to us and even abusive to treat a child in such a way, but the story demonstrates just how committed Abraham was to God.

Later in the story of God with God's people, we learn that God is committed to us in the same way. God would not hold back, offering even his own Son for us. God is still committed to us in such amazing ways. Because God is committed to us for no merit of our own, we would also infer that others too are just as important to God. God is just as committed to them, even if they are different from us.

There are many in our world today that are hurting and feeling the burden of suffering. From racism, to poverty, violence, and other calamity there are people in our communities trying to tell us something important about their experience of America and the world. We show we are committed to them not just with our words, but also with our action.

What will we do today to show we are committed to those that are telling us something is wrong? Such action does not have to be large and dramatic. Commitment can even be ordinary, but it should be more than words. We have to do something.

In Hebrew, the word dabar means both word and action. However, for us the two don't always mean the same thing. What will we do today in both word and action to show our commitment to God and to others?
