Always Hope
A reading for Friday, May 20, 2016: Ezekiel 37:1-14.
Imagine the desperation of the Israelites living in exile in Babylon. Everything that was important to the had been taken away. Their families were split apart. They lost the connection with the Holy land, as a gift from God. Even their faith was in peril now without access to the Temple in Jerusalem. What would happen to them?
Yet, the prophet Ezekiel stood and boldly proclaimed through the image of the dry bones that the people of God would live and even thrive again. In that very image, notice it is God who acts to restore the bones to life. Notice it is even God who calls the prophet to action. Ezekiel is the one who prophesies that it would happen, but it is God who saves and restores.
God's people did return to Jerusalem just as God said they would...
Almighty God, we are grateful that you are a God in whom there is always hope. That hope comes not through our action but through yours. Through the power of your Spirit today, may we proclaim your mighty acts of creation, transformation, and salvation. This day and forevermore. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
