Under Our Feet
A reading for Wednesday, March 16, 2016: Psalm 8.
To be set "a little lower than God" is not a position of privilege or status for human beings. It is instead of place of responsibility with a duty to care for everything that is placed "under our feet."
What are we that God has placed us in such a position?
We are the beings on the planet most capable of care. We are the creatures that can plan and organize ourselves in such a way that all of creation can be set apart, or made holy. We are the animals that have the capacity for kindness and compassion for all life on our planet from the smallest insect to the largest mammal. We are the beings that are aware of our own mortality, which can be in jeopardy without a healthy biosphere in which to dwell.
"O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!" You have tasked us with caring for your creation, which is your gift to us. Even more, when we act with the calling you have given as "a little lower than God," we enjoy a fullness of your presence in our lives and in our world.
May we fully embrace our duty to you as the one who created it all!
