Prayer Time
A reading for Tuesday, February 2, 2016: Matthew 14:22-33.
What an amazing story... Jesus walks on water. Peter too. The storm is frightening and suddenly Jesus is there to calm the fears of the disciples. It's all very dramatic and exciting.
Yet... notice how it starts? Jesus "went up the mountain by himself to pray." The whole thing starts with solitude and silence for Jesus. From there Jesus moves out to be and to do the very thing God intends. But first there is silence.
It has been said that the world's most valuable resource is now time. Time has been commoditized. Technology demands a more effective use of our time. We can work and be connected all the time. Even those that are retired say they have no time left in the midst of every busy day. To be bored with too much time in our society is perhaps a sign that your life isn't what it should be.
The question remains, however, what do we do with our time? Perhaps the story today would call us to spend some time at least in silence and solitude. Before all the drama of life begins. Prior to any excitement. The best thing we can do is spend some time in prayer and silence.
Martin Luther was quoted as saying, "I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer." How will you spend your time today? From there you can move out to be and to do the very thing God intends. But first there is silence.
