Cornerstone
A reading for Monday, February 29, 2016: Psalm 118:5-29.
There is a story that goes along with the building of Solomon's Temple. It seems the stone cutters chiseled large stones that would become the walls of the great structure. One of those stones was either mis-measured or cut incorrectly. It didn't fit in the place the builders had originally designed it for. They tossed it aside thinking it was waste.
Later, when the Temple was nearly finished there was a space left between the last two walls. They needed a special stone that would connect the two walls and make the Temple complete. Someone noticed that the stone that had been thrown away as useless was the perfect fit. It became the stone that joined the two walls together and ultimately completed the Temple.
We never know what's useful in God's economy. Sometimes it seems our efforts are wasted. It didn't work the way we hoped. Nobody appreciated the effort we made. Our love, our hope, our service seems as if it has been thrown on the scrap pile and forgotten.
But then later, we learn that something we did made a difference. Even though we didn't know it at the time, God was using our talent, our commitment, or our devotion for something special. We are called to be faithful and not successful, because sometimes failure in our eyes is just success whose time has not yet come.
