Refuge and Strength

A reading for Thursday, December 10, 2015: Psalm 46:1-7.

The presence of the Lord is not only the reason for our rejoicing, but also the reason for our refuge and our strength. The world is a scary place sometimes. Even for the Psalmist, written thousands of years ago, the world was a scary place.

Yet the Psalmist knows how to deal with our fear. Like a river that flows into the midst of a great city, bringing life and beauty, the presence of God brings us refuge and strength in the midst of great calamity and fear. The presence of God is the way to peace!

Even if bad things happen to us, and truth is they will sometimes, we will hold fast to our values and trust in God. Even in the midst of those bad things we will boldly proclaim, "The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge." We will not be afraid, because God is with us...
