Elusive Peace

A reading for Friday, December 11, 2015: John 14:1-7, 27-29.

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives."

Truth is, God doesn't promise us peace in the way we sometimes perceive the word. For us, peace is security and safety from harm. For us, peace is having enough in a world where there is not enough. For us, peace is being part of a group that knows us and accepts us... maybe even loves us.

Perhaps God's peace is simply the presence of Jesus in our lives in the midst of losses and struggles. It's not always the answers to the questions, but the questions themselves. It's humility and even gratitude in a world where others are selfishly trying to manipulate for more.

It's not that those others things aren't important and worth desiring. It's just that...

Peace with God is enough!

What if peace is elusive for us because we don't recognize it when we see it?
