Why Do We Sin?
A reading for Monday, November 23, 2015: 2 Samuel 12:1-13.
Why do we sin? Why do we fail to answer God's blessings of life and provision with faithlessness and betrayal? This is the question David is confronted with in today's lesson.
There is something about being human that leaves us unable to do the right thing sometimes. We try and we try, and yet at the end of the day we discover that in the midst of all our success there are still things that are undone and left unfulfilled. We are hard to satisfy. Even David, the king over all God's people, was not able to be satisfied. Nathan said, "Thus says the Lord... I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added as much more." But David turned away and did evil against God. He wasn't satisfied even with so much.
Perhaps this might indicate that one remedy for human sin is a sense of being satisfied. God has provided abundantly for us, and promises to continue to do so. We can choose to be satisfied with what we have been given or we can feel undone and unfulfilled. But know this, when we begin to feel as if we deserve more certainly sin is lurking around in hopes of trapping us.
Why do we sin? Is it because we are not satisfied? Gratitude is the way of freedom from sin. "Now the Lord has put away your sin; you shall not die." Thanks be to God!
