God is Plain

A reading for Wednesday, November 11, 2015: Romans 1:18-25.

"For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them." God is not the abstract concept of a man in a long white beard seated on a cloud someplace far away. God is not a tyrant demanding homage and threatening against having fun in the world, enjoying life. God is not a secret code, and our only hope for salvation is unlocking this code through the right formula or the right belief system.

God is plain. God has shown us who and what God is. We know God through the person of Jesus Christ. We understand God as compassion and grace, and empathy. God is strength in the face of tyranny, and transformation when evil attempts to rule our hearts. God is the love we share with another person, devoting ourselves to their well being as well as our own.  God is love.

God is peace. Peace when all is right with the world around us. Peace found not merely as the absence of conflict, but peace as justice for all. God is the peace of wholeness and joy, tears in our eyes when we suddenly realize just how much God has done for us and how much we are grateful.

God is with us, right now, in this place. God is the hands we hold and the hearts that hold us. God is in the prayers we say for the broken, the lost and the lonely. God is in opening our hearts even to those who hate us and want to do us harm. God can break open the world and the conflicts we share in ways we can't even imagine.

God came down from heaven and dwelled among us full of grace and truth... God is plain!

Thank you God for allowing us to know you. Help us show others the way to know you.
Bless us all in the name of Jesus our Christ. Amen.
