Hiding From God?

A reading for Wednesday, September 30, 2015: Jonah 1:1-3:3.

In two simple lines of scripture we see the call of Jonah... The Lord said go to Ninevah, and Jonah said no! Jonah fled. Jonah hid. Jonah caused others to suffer along the way.

But notice the Lord God did not give up on Jonah. Look at how far God was willing to go in pursuit of Jonah. Even when Jonah was faithless and obstinate, God continued to work to bring him back. There is no place to hide from God. Even the others along the journey with Jonah had their lives changed because God never gave up on Jonah. The men on the ship came to faith in God, "Then the men feared the Lord even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows."

It's not unusual for us to answer the call of God with no. We do as Jonah did... we flee, we hide, and perhaps we even cause (or at least allow) others to suffer along the way with us. And yet God is faithful still. God never gives up on us. Look at how far God is willing to go in pursuit of allowing us the pleasure of serving. What belly of the whale do we find ourselves within?

In the end, Jonah served the Lord. So do we...

"Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?"
-Psalm 139:7
