Keep Awake!
A reading for Tuesday, August 25, 2015: Mark 13:28-37.
"Keep Awake!" It's an action of faith. It's a warning and a promise.
Sometimes it's easy to keep awake, when we are filled with energy and the promise of new things. We move from one thing to another with ease. Our minds spark with imagination and creativity. Every conversation is easy and nothing seems impossible.
At other times, it's drudgery to keep awake. Depression and loneliness threaten to overwhelm us. Everything we do seems to come up short, or short circuit, or fail to light. We wonder if we even still believe in things like we once did. How can we keep awake when sleep seems like all we want.
Jesus said, "Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come." No matter how we feel, or what challenges may come... we "keep awake" because we know our salvation is not dependent on us and our energy and our creativity or even our failure or shortcomings. Salvation comes with the Lord, and we need only be ready it when it comes.
When Jesus comes, no matter what, we will be awake... it's a warning and a promise!
