Jesus Walks With Us

A reading for Wednesday, July 8, 2015: Luke 24:13-35.

Jesus walks with us, and yet we don't recognize him. We are too busy with our busyness. Our day is filled with those we know, walking and talking about the things that are happening. There is a lot happening, everyday, all day.

Jesus walks with us, and yet we don't recognize him. Suddenly a stranger appears. What should we do? We might talk to him, or we might not. After all, he is a stranger. He could be different from us, and what would we say? Then the stranger talks to us. We are welcomed into the conversation before we can welcome it. We are given hospitality before we can offer it.

Jesus walks with us, and yet we don't recognize him. The stranger offers us comfort. The stranger can teach us many things. Things we didn't know about life and faith and hope. Stay with us stranger! For we enjoy your company. We want to know more. The least we can do is to offer you a meal, and a safe place to stay.

Jesus walks with us, and yet we don't recognize him. When we offer the stranger blessings and peace, suddenly our eyes are open and we recognize that it's Jesus there with us all the time. "For wherever two or three are gathered, there I will be also" says the Lord. And we remember who we are and what our lives are about. Our hearts are filled up with the Spirit of God.

“The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to us!" Just like in the Acts, today we might have the same opportunity to welcome Jesus in form of the stranger. We give thanks to God for the blessing of Jesus our Lord...
