Another Same Story

A reading for Friday, June 5, 2015: Luke 18:9-14.

Jesus told a another story, to those that were saying: "I have already gotten for myself all I could ever need." And also: "At least I am better than that person."

Both statements are made by a person(s) who deeply fears losing control. Such a person will not allow themselves to trust another or to trust God even. For such dependence on someone or something else is to lose control. This they cannot abide.

Our world is this world too. Limitless technology and wealth, combined with absolute, independent freedom are the ideals of control. They insulate us from having to depend on another, or even to depend on God. This we will not allow.

Jesus told another story for us... He pointed us to honest humility and simple trust in God for what we need. Jesus invited us to give up control in favor of trusting God. "For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted."
