Abundance
A reading for Thursday, April 23, 2015: Luke 5:1-11.
Abundance is one of the results of faith, so long as that abundance comes from God and not from our own effort and striving.
Peter and the others had labored all night for a catch. They were tired and worn out from the work. They had given up, believing the abundance of a catch wasn't possible for them. They couldn't do it alone.
Then along comes Jesus who teaches them and calls them again to the nets. The results are so overwhelming that they can't hold all the blessing themselves. The abundance of God spills over to others... The disciples are so overwhelmed, they follow Jesus for a different catch.
We live in a culture of abundance to be sure. The abundance of wealth, of technology, of resources. We live with a mantra that more is better, and even more is even better. Yet, how much of our abundance comes from God and how much of it comes from our own effort and striving? When our perception is that abundance is under our own control, then can it really point us back to God? Do we really need God if we can just do it ourselves?
Abundance is one of the results of faith, but dependence on God for our abundance is truly a miracle.
