A Week Ago Today

A reading for Friday, April 10, 2015: John 16:1-15.

Almighty God, shape us by your word and fill us with your Spirit so that we may live as your beloved children and proclaim the good news of your saving love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A week ago today, Good Friday, the story testified that everything had gone wrong. Jesus was on trial. He was persecuted and tortured. He was crucified, for crimes he did not commit. Even though we knew the ending we grieved again over the passion of the Christ.

Today, just a week later, we know why. So the advocate could be given to us, as Jesus ascended to the right hand of God the Father. The Spirit would teach us everything. "He will declare to you the things that are to come." The Spirit is the source of our blessings, given to us from a God of blessings, through the Son who declared the blessings of God in faithfulness like no other. The blessings of God are the point.

A week ago today we were still filled with the Spirit. Today our lesson tells us why...
