A reading for Monday, January 19, 2015: Mark 3:7-19a.
MLK DAY
On August 28th, at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. offered the famous words known as the "I Have A Dream" speech. Somewhere between 250,000 and 300,000 people gathered there on the mall to hear the words and to pray that the demons called racial prejudice and segregation would bow down and submit.
Perhaps it reminds us of our lesson today from Mark, as people gathered to hear the words of Jesus Christ preaching the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven. From all around the region, people from everyplace gathered to see what Jesus was doing. They gathered for faith!
If it's been a while for you, take a few minutes today and listen to King's speech or read the text. Imagine the disciples for peace and justice that were called to action that day. Consider what you are being called to do for the same.
"With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day."
