The Open Secret

A reading for Thursday, December 11, 2014: Luke 22:1-13.

There are things that happen in secret, and things that happen out in the open.

The meetings with the Chief Priest and Judas Iscariot happened in secret. There was betrayal, and payoffs, and evil plotted to have its day. Judas looked "for an opportunity to betray him to them when no crowd was present."

On the other hand, Jesus met with the disciples out in the openness of Passover, in a public room with nothing to fear. His ministry would not hide even though Jesus knew what was about to happen.

When we find ourselves in an ethical dilemma, perhaps this is a question we might ask ourselves. Is this something I want to be secret or can others know what I am doing?

Answering that one question might be the way to know what's right.
