A Few of Our Favorite Things

A reading for Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Luke 21:29-38.

Jesus told them a parable. Look at the fig tree. Consider that it's winter like it is now and the tree is barren. Only the long stark branches of the empty tree appear. When you see the first leaves budding out from the woody stalk, then you will know that summer is near.

In the same way, "When you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near."

But wait a minute... What are these things?

Perhaps Jesus assumes that those listening to him each day in the Temple already know?

We know too. These things are the things that Jesus has taught all along. Peace and compassion. Grace. Community and service to one another. Prayer and justice for all people. Confession, humility and perhaps gratitude above all else. Are we grateful to God for the blessings we enjoy? These are the things that demonstrate the Kingdom of God.

"When you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near."
