Living AND Growing
A reading for Tuesday, October 28, 2014: Luke 11:27-36.
Cause us to live and grow in faith, so that we may bear good fruit of the glory of your holy realm...
There are two parts to bearing good fruit, according to this prayer offered today in the PCUSA Daily Prayer Collect, living and growing. Both are essential.
To live is to accept the love given to each of us by God. We are created through no effort on our part. We are saved by the grace of Jesus Christ. We continue to live out of an abundance of blessings provided to us by the power of the Holy Spirit. Living in faith is simply a gift. It is what God has done for each of us. This is what the woman in the lesson today exclaims about Jesus... “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you!”
Growing in faith then, it might be said is our response to God. Growing in faith means to take seriously the need for repentance, "hearing the word of God and obeying it," as Jesus says today in the lesson. Building our life around God's way for life as offered through the words and lessons of scripture is how we continue to grow in faith.
Both are important. Living AND growing in faith is how we bear fruit, demonstrating to others what we believe about God and about the world around us.
Jesus describes it as light. Let the light into ourselves through the eye, receiving what we have been given. Then let the light shine so that others might see it as well. Living AND growing in faith is how we bear good fruit.
