God Looks Favorably...
A reading for Tuesday, October 7, 2014: Luke 7:1-17.
It sounds strange to us, these ancient stories of healing and bringing a man back to life after death. Jesus needs only to speak and miraculous healing occurs. He needs only to have compassion on a widow at the death of her only son, and "he sits up again."
We wonder... why do such things no longer occur?
Truth is, they do. There is a photo making it's way around the internet of an operating room in a hospital. The nurses and the doctors are gathered in a circle offering prayer. "Come Lord Jesus and heal" we imagine is their prayer. Sometimes with just a word, miraculous healing occurs.
Or what about a person addicted to alcohol or depressed to the point of suicide. The church of Jesus Christ has compassion on them. We respond to the prayers of family and friends surrounding them with love and the power of community. They are brought back from the brink of death...
Some would say these stories are not the same. But I say, “God has looked favorably on his people!” This word about him spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding country.
Truth is Jesus still lives and heals and brings us back from the dead.
