Jesus Answers

A reading for Wednesday, September 10, 2014: John 11:1-16.

Jesus is never too far away when those we love are suffering. In today's lesson, Jesus and the disciples are traveling and working together when they receive a message from Bethany, the village where Mary and Martha live with their brother Lazarus. We aren't told where Jesus is or how far away it is, but we know that someone knows where to find Jesus and how to get him a message.

“Lord, he whom you love is ill.”

... and Jesus answers. Even in the midst of danger from those that wanted to kill him. Even in the midst of the weariness of traveling and working in other places. Even in the midst of the continuing suffering of others, Jesus responds to the plea of those he loves. Jesus comes to Bethany.

In fact, the word Bethany means "house of suffering/misery." This is the village where Jesus resides when he comes to Jerusalem the final time. This is where Jesus chooses to dwell and to bring glory to God. When those living in suffering and misery cry out to God, God shows up for those he loves.

Jesus is never too far away when those we love are suffering. Jesus answers... and we are grateful to God!
