Generous and Grateful
A reading for Monday, September 22, 2014: Luke 1:1-4, 3:1-14.
“What then should we do?” the crowds ask John the Baptist. Right from the beginning of Luke's "orderly account" of the life of Jesus, there is this question. What then should we do?
Be generous and be grateful, says John. “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.” For the tax collectors, “Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.” For the soldiers, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.” Simply, do what is right because you have been saved by through the good news of Jesus Christ and are free now to do so.
Truth is that faith is not just a head-trip or something that we think. It's not a belief system disconnected from the way we live our lives. Faith, like love, is not just a feeling. It's an action. "Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight," says John.
Right from the beginning, Luke wants us to know what we are to do. Be generous and be grateful...
