Aren't You Jealous John?
A reading for Tuesday, August 12, 2014: John 3:22-36.
"Aren't you jealous John?" That's really the question they come asking.
Jesus and John are both baptizing and people are beginning to leave John and move towards Jesus. The Jewish authorities, who by the way don't like either Jesus or John and would discredit the whole movement, come in hopes of breaking the bond and creating division.
John isn't interested in who is more famous or more popular. These are earthly things. John only wants to know what God is doing with him and with Jesus in increasing the Kingdom of Heaven. These are heavenly things.
I have a quote over my desk: "There is no end to the good you can do if you don't care who gets the credit." Resist the temptation today to be jealous of someone else or to seek your own honor and glory. These are not worthy of God. Instead, offer a hand expecting nothing in return. Raise up a colleague or a competitor as worthy of God and ask God to bless them.
John responded to the Jews, "No one can receive anything except what has been given from heaven." May the blessings of heaven rain down upon us this day and wash away any jealousy and division.
