Trust Like a Child

A reading for Wednesday, June 18, 2014: Matthew 18:1-9.

“Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

It is not the one that does great things, but the one that trusts in the great One. Trust is the quality of a child. Children trust even things that are not worthy of trust. Children love and trust parents that are unlovable and won't act in their best interest. Children are vulnerable. Children look for the best in things, even when there is no reason. They are easily taken advantage of and harmed precisely because of their trust. They trust even when trust makes absolutely no sense.

That's why Jesus calls woe down on anyone that takes advantage of trust. Woe to anyone that causes a vulnerable and humble child to stumble and fall. To use their vulnerability and humility for personal gain or for harm is worthy of hell fire and judgement. It is very serious...

This is how we are to trust in God through Jesus Christ. To be vulnerable and to act with humility makes us great in the Kingdom of Heaven not because we are great, but because we trust in the One that is great. If anything causes you not to trust in the One, just as a small child trusts when trust makes no sense, then it is to be cast off... period. No matter what it is. It is very serious...

Jesus said we are to trust in God with crazy vulnerability and ridiculous humility. Like a child!

"Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven..."
