Are We Rich or Are We Disciples?

A reading for Tuesday, June 24, 2014: Matthew 19:23-30.

The rich depend on their ability and their resources. They have all they need, and more than all they need, so they don't depend on anything from anyone else including God.

But disciples, according to Jesus, have given their lives over to a different economy all together. Disciples have given over their ability and their resources to serve Christ. It doesn't mean they don't have resources, though indeed disciples may not, but instead it is a statement about what we choose to do with what we have.

Who do we depend on? Is it God? Is it the service of Christ? Or is our goal not to be dependent on anything from anyone else including God? Are we rich or are we disciples?

The truth is only God can save us. Our resources, our ability, whether we have a little or a lot... none of this can save. Only God can save. “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”

Disciples depend on God and the economy of serving Christ where the first are last. Those that give all away receive more than everything in return. Disciples are saved and dwell with God forever and ever.
