Salt and Light

A reading for Tuesday, May 13, 2014: Matthew 5:11-16.

What does it mean to be salt and light? If salt is to flavor and even preserve the food to which it is added, and light enables those living in the house to better see what's inside, then what does it mean for us as Christians to be salt and light?

God has provided for the world a people to add joy and hope and even to preserve the truth of creation and of God's love. When we help interpret the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and through the world, then others too can see what we can see. In the way we live, the choices we make demonstrate that God so loved the world that he sent his one and only Son, not to condemn the world, but that all the world might be saved. How else will others be able to see what's inside our God unless we shine the grace of Jesus Christ all around. This is what it means to be salt and light to the world.

Do not lose heart even if you are being persecuted and made fun of for your salt and light. Joy and hope, not to mention the grace of Christ, are not always welcome in those we meet. But rejoice in continuing to persevere... without salt and light there is only bland, spoiled life and darkness.

YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH AND THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD!
