The Apostle of Ireland
A reading for Monday, March 17, 2014: Mark 3:7-19a.
The mission of Jesus was gaining in our lesson for today. Many people who had diseases or infirmities had heard the good news and wanted help from Jesus. They wanted to be well. They wanted the Kingdom. They crowded around Jesus by the thousands. So Jesus appointed apostles that would be given the power to spread the good news and also to cast out demons in order to heal the sick. From that point on, men (and women) would be called upon to help spread the good news of the Kingdom of God and heal those needing help.
Patrick was only 16 years old when he was captured from his home in Britain and carried to Ireland to be a slave. He worked for six years before escaping and returning to his family. Later, however, Patrick heard the call of the apostle from Jesus. He returned to Ireland of all places to spread the good news and to heal the sick who were there. Today we celebrate Patrick, the "Apostle of Ireland."
The mission of Jesus is still gaining even today. Many people who have diseases and other infirmities still need to hear the good news of Christ. There is still a call for apostles to spread the good news and to cast out anything that stands in the way of the Kingdom of God. We may never be as important as "the twelve" or as well known as Patrick, but each of us has our part to play.
Will you be an apostle of Christ Jesus today?
