An Unexpected Blessing

A reading for Tuesday, February 4, 2014: John 6:41-51

Sometimes a blessing comes just at the right time.  Just before we are ready to give up.  We may have even given up already.  Life has given us more than we can handle.  Enough, we say.  We have had enough...  I quit!

But then, a surprise from out of nowhere.  A phone call.  A commendation at work.  An unexpected gift.  A hug from a child.  Something we don't expect comes upon us and we are overwhelmed with the understanding that God provided for us just when we needed it most.  It's enough to keep us going just a little longer.

Jesus came down from heaven.  An unexpected blessing.  The Jews wondered how such a thing could even happen.  But just at the right time, when all was thought to be lost for God's people living under the burden of Roman oppression and the corruption of the religious class, Jesus came down.  God's people could keep going just a little longer.

Like the manna that had restored the Israelites as they wandered the desert, Jesus is the bread of heaven that restores us when we need it most.  Jesus said... "This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."

Faith is relying on the things we cannot yet see, and counting on God to provide for what we need at just the time we need it.  Faith is depending on unexpected blessings.  May you live the life of faith today!
