Making Us Crazy!

A reading for Friday, January 3, 2014: John 6:15-27

Everyone likes excitement and the power of the unexpected.  Jesus had such miraculous power and could do things that made people crazy.  The miracles were intended as a sign, to demonstrate the arrival of the Kingdom of God in the world.  They were part of the overall message of Jesus.  The Kingdom of God proclaims that God loves the world and those in it, and intends wholeness and peace for all mankind.  That's what the power of God is always about.

But those that had witnessed the loaves and the fishes, Jesus walking on the water, and even the ability of Jesus to be everywhere all at once were losing the focus on the message.  They were ready to make Jesus King in the midst of all the excitement.  So Jesus withdrew...

God never leaves us, but will protect us from ourselves.  Sometimes we get focused on power and influence and excitement and that makes us crazy.  Perhaps forgetting the overall message of the Kingdom, it's more fun to focus on the power and the excitement of faith and church.

Jesus says, "Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you."
