Get Up and Eat!

A reading for Thursday, January 2, 2014:  John 6:1-14

"This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world,” say the people gathered there on the grass by the Sea of Galilee.  Perhaps Jesus reminded them of Elijah, who journeyed forty days and forty nights to be fed with cake and jar of water left by the angels.  "Get up and eat!" they had commanded the great prophet whose return was expected by all Jewish people.  When Elijah returned, he would announce the arrival of the Messiah, the one who was to save.  The message is clear.  Get up and be nourished, for the Kingdom of God is at hand.

On this first day of the new year, 2014, perhaps it is a blessing for us to start off hearing the same good news.  Get up and eat for the Kingdom of God is at hand.  Hear the good news.  Enjoy the blessings of community, being nourished by the signs of God in our midst.  Get busy serving the mission of God, telling the world what is now known.

God has come down from the mountain, and we are saved.  Thanks be to God!
