Who Is The Greatest?

A reading for Saturday, December 28, 2013: Matthew 18:1-14

“Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” asked the disciples.  By this time, the disciples of Jesus had been living and working with Jesus for quite some time.  They heard him teach.  They watched as he preached the Kingdom of God.  Perhaps in their attempt to be faithful to the mission, they needed to know what to do and how to live?

So as if it were Christmas Eve again, in a stable surrounded by animals, shepherds, and kings... Jesus took a child and put it in their midst saying "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven."

The point is the greatest is not because of what we do and what we know.  At least, not in the Kingdom of God.  Instead, the greatest in the Kingdom is simply the one chosen by God, blessed with the power of the Spirit, and humbly present in the world in whatever form God has chosen to be good and useful.

May we not too soon forget the power of the Christ Child in our midst!
