Preparations

Read Matthew 19:23-30

"It's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven?"  That's a convicting scripture to read on the eve of Thanksgiving.  When we are making preparations, out of our wealth and prosperity, to celebrate with a bounty of blessings.  It remains true that we are the richest nation ever to have existed on the face of the earth.

This is a very difficult issue for us as Americans.  Perhaps there are voices that can help.  I am uplifted by the story today of Pope Francis "first" teaching issued from the Vatican after his nearly eight months of sermons, prayers and teaching.  Take some time to read the news of "The Joy of the Gospel."  While critical of certain parts of our economic system, the Pope does not wholly condemn, but instead says, "Money must serve, not rule!  The Pope loves everyone, rich and poor alike, but he is obliged in the name of Christ to remind all that the rich must help, respect and promote the poor."

As we prepare to gather around our Thanksgiving tables, perhaps we pray that the bounty of blessings  we enjoy might be used to share and spread the joy of the gospel...
