From Where Does Our Help Come?

Read Matthew 15:21-28

"I look to the hills, from where does my help come?" Psalm 121

While Jesus is traveling on the coast by the cities of Tyre and Sidon, he encounters a woman living there who is in need of healing for her daughter.  Jesus is a foreigner in such a region, as are the disciples.

In the ancient world, deities were regional and local.  When in the place of a Canaanite people, it would be the Canaanite god's jurisdiction and so foreigners too would honor and worship the Canaanite deity.  Help would come from those hills.  When in the region of Tyre and Sidon and in need of help, help came from Canaanite hills.

But this woman sees something else.  Her faith knows help comes from Jesus and the God of creation.  Even if that God is not yet her God, she believes in the power of Christ to heal and because of that faith she is made well.  Even in Canaan, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob rules.  The woman knows her help comes from Jesus Christ.

From where does our help come?  Our help comes from the name of the Lord!  No matter where we are, or what we need, our God is the help we need.  Our God saves.
