Read Matthew 12:1-14
Jesus was not one to simply ignore the rules. Rules of faith were important to Jesus, and have always been crucial to the people of God.
It's just that Jesus insisted that the rules for the people of God always provided for life and abundance and hope. That's the way God had designed the law and Jesus knew it. If following the rules was limiting to life, or out of an idea of scarcity, or against hope... then Jesus would have nothing to do with them.
When do our rules get measured against that standard? Are we people of life and abundance and hope, or are we people of rules for rules sake?
"For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
